Kimly Seafood
Nyonya Chicken Cube Rice
This dish made me feel sad whilst eating it. It was unpleasant tasting from first to last bite. There's a sharp unnatural tang from I couldn't identify, but I sure did not like it. The rest of the dish is your standard Kimly affair topped with an egg who's consistency depends on the chef's mood - today's chef was not in a good mood.
Xiao Pang Niu - Jurong Point
Bibimbap with Spicy Chicken
A very hearty meal. Lots of satisfyingly crunchy veggies, fragrant seaweed, tender and spicy chicken - even the egg was runny which made for the perfect topper. I did feel that they could've topped it off with some good quality sesame oil but overall it was still good.
Green Dot - Jurong Point
Turmeric Rice w Lion Mane Rendang
One of the better rendangs out there even before considering this is vegetarian. The mushroom satisfyingly emulated the texture of well cooked shreddable meat. The flavour was not traditional - it had an added creaminess to it which I actually prefer. The acar was decent, a little sparse but I can't complain when they loaded up on the rendang. The papadam was stale and the stir-fry veges were mid. It comes with a portion of soup, I took one taste and threw it all away, incredibly nasty soup. Overall the bento itself is good.
Crave - Jurong Point
Ayam Berempah Crispy Fried Chicken Leg
Honestly, I was pressured to order this because my memory of this place is that it's mediocre at best and inedible at worst. However, maybe they changed their shit up recently because the meal I just had was solid. Chicken was really crispy on the outside, tender and perfectly cooked on the inside - the squeamish ones would say a little pink but I digress. The sambal was a little stingy in portion but decent in taste so I'll allow. Rice was very fluffy despite being well enriched in aromatics. Egg was haphazardly done, guess it's just an egg, but goes to show the attention to detail.
Seabay Wok
Black Pepper Chicken Fried Rice
Just dissappointing that they ain't never heard of salt. Like just sprinkle a little more and it'd taste so much better. The chicken had a real funk to it - I highly doubt its freshness. I will say they at least delivered on the black pepper front - it was loaded but overall, a pathetic meal.
Nandos
Boneless Thighs with One Side
The only reason I got this was because it was half off at $10. It has been many years since I've eaten at Nandos and I gotta say I think my tastes have evolved. Back then I hated anything with vinegar but this time around I thought it cut through the rich and juicy chicken thigh providing a nice counterbalance. I got the peri-crackle rice as my side. The crackles was in the form of tiny seeds only one of which I think I recognise - sunflower. Nonetheless it gave a crisp pleasant textural contrast to the soft rice. The extra hot periperi sauce which I doused the meal in liberally gave me eventual bathroom regrets but I'd do it all over anyway because it was that delicious. A little pricey at full price, in my opinion, but as a treat once in a while would be appreciated.
Rumah Makan Minag
Ikan Asam Pedas
The fish and asam pedas was pretty good, though the vegetable sides were a letdown. The brinjal in particular was awful — quite slimy and still tough. The ladyfinger was also on the tougher side; seems like if they just cooked both veg a little longer they would have been salvageable. The asam pedas gravy was the one saving grace of this dish, though I wish they were a little more generous with it.
Qin Ji Rougamo
Black Pepper Beef
Their best hit yet. The first one I had, I had it cold and I thought it was kinda dry and the beef was tough but my bad G. I had it again today but whilst it was hot, and boy was it succulent. The beef was incredibly tender and downright juicy. The black pepper kick was bold. A fantastic light meal/snack.
Qin Ji Rougamo
Cumin Rougamo
Absolutely delicious. The crunchy crispy exterior of the rougamo combined with the succulent, fatty, and flavourful pork tickles every part of your brain. The pork has a nice unusual spice (to me) as I can't say i've had cumin forward dishes many times but they've really figured it out with this one. It keeping well in the fridge and still tasting good cold is a boon to boot.
Old Chang Kee
Curry Potato Spring O with Curry Dip
A low risk junk food entry by OCK reusing their curry o filling within the spring o wrapper with their curry chicken rice curry as a dip. As someone who can drink their curry straight, I though this was a genius move on their part, it was an all too familiar taste but in a new combo that hit all the right parts of my brain. The spring o I received was on the soggier side - should have been crispy, but even this failure led to a more chewy texture which I nonetheless enjoyed. I conclude by deeming this dish the perfect junk food.
Nenek Recipe
Ayam Penyet
The chicken is a rather standard large chicken leg - very crispy on the outside but the meat especially when you move away from the coating has not much seasoning, so no marinade or brine clearly. The sambal is a brutal chilli padi type I'm assuming because it made my nose drip but I still found it rather flavourful and if not for its punch I would consider this dish a fail. The tempe and tofu was crispy enough though a little underseasoned. Came with a couple cucumber slices and a disposable cherry tomato. Overall, I feel this is a benchmark Ayam Penyet, extremely standard.
Sanook Thai
Stuffed Chicken Wing
Its a chicken wing stuffed with fish paste. Some may cry "abomination" but I say nay. It was good. Crispy on the outside and the fish paste was surprisingly fluffy. Overall on the saltier side and a little dry, perhaps you might be satisfied with just a single piece.
Boon Heng Atas Hainanese Chicken Rice
Chicken Rice
A very standard plate of chicken rice. Chicken is on the blander side and whilst the rice is quite li li fen ming, it too succumbs to being a little bland. It's not deal breaking and it's nothing a good dousing of the chilli, which was actually quite good, cannot fix.
The Hot Burger (Vienna)
Smoky Bacon Cheeseburger, Sweet Potato Fries, French Fries
Burger was humongous and decent. Fries were good. Sweet potato fries were very good.
Granny Lim's Braised Munch
Braised Pork Rice
Oh boy did I go town on what Granny Lim was putting down. The braised pork was tender and flavourful. The pickled mustard greens cut through the rather rich dish well and added a nice crunch. The braised egg was a little tough but I can overlook it since it well seasoned. There was enough sauce such that every grain of rice was coated and slid down easy.
Pearl Delight
Spicy Chicken Burger, Fries, Corndog, & Snow Blend Grape
Reasonably priced. The spicy chicken bruger, to me, was almost as good as if not better than the McSpicy. I don't know where they got the patty from but it's nearly identical to the well-loved burger from the double arches. The snow blend is delicious - diabetes inducing to be sure but refreshing and cooling. The fries were nicely salted and crispy though the corndog was on the greasy side.
Gokul Raas Restaurant
Chicken Rice (Vegetarian)
I know, I know. It's vegetarian chicken rice, how can it be good? Well this one will take some explaining. It's not quite chicken rice but as a dish it outshines some of the poorer chicken rice out there. The chilli punches way above it's weight class without even having used any actual chicken stock. The rice grains tastes like it has been cooked with schmaltz but knowing that it doesn't makes it mighty impressive. The "chicken" is likely to be your biggest gripe, yes it's some kind of soy product but honestly, good texture and taste. Come with some veges too. Might not hit a chicken rice craving but will definitely satisfy a tasty food craving.
Thai Makan by Thai Dynasty
Thai Green Curry
Thick, creamy, flavourful delicious immaculate green curry. Plenty of chicken, eggplants and vegetables. Slurping it gives you a nice spice kick in throat but it isn't spicy at all, just a hint of spice and a beautiful aroma that can make a grown man cry (allegedly). The jasmine rice it comes with (+S$1.58 which I already included in the listed price) is very fragrant and sticky just the way I like it. Genuinely the best green curry I've ever had and is now my favourite Thai dish I've ever had from anywhere, and I've been to Thailand... Absolutely bussin no cap you should try it. I LOVE GREEN CURRY RAHHHH
The Bread Gang & Co
Nasi Goreng Roasted Chicken
I don't know why this is so revolutionary. Take the chicken rice chicken and slap it on some nasi goreng - instant banger. The chicken from this store is tender and flavourful albeit a little on the dry side, the nasi goreng was rather greasy but very flavourful so I shan't complain. Large portion too.
The Bread Gang & Co
Bangers & Mash
I will never not be disappointed at how bad halal sausage is and this was no difference (I hadn't noticed it was as such else I would not have ordered it). Despite its massive shortcoming, the sauteed onions and peppers paired nicely with the rather stodgy mash but flavourful gravy. Large portion too.
Pezzo
Lasagna
Like your favourite fat orange cat I was fiending for some lasagna so I ordered from the first place and this was it. Like your first choices in life where you simply pick before considering all options, it was a mediocre lasagne. Large chunks of mince, cloying wallpaper paste cheese, no real bechamel, and an overall dog food-like consistency.
Seabay Wok Delight
Maggi Goreng w/ Popcorn Chicken
I'm surprised how a dish with so much wok hei has actually no flavour whatsoever. It seem they used the noodles and threw away the seasonings. They didn't even use salt. Hard pass.
Parkson Bak Kut Teh
Claypot Chicken Rice
A little socarrat but still measely, singular taste profile - salty, one dimensional, overall bland-tasting, horrible lap cheong - chewy and plasticky, but hey at least the chicken was tender albeit rather tasteless.
Parkson Bak Kut Teh
Bak Kut Teh
Soup had a wonderful peppery kick, a lip smacking sheen, light but notably still bodied texture. Meat was fall off the bone tender. Could benefit from more garlic flavour and rice could be stickier but the soup really was fantastic.
